INMED Success Story

When you support INMED, you change lives—just ask Nery Hernandez. At INMED’s recent Board of Directors’ meeting, Nery shared her story of how INMED helped her as a young, inexperienced mother at age 19 and set her on the path to entrepreneurship. The owner of Nery’s Pupuseria in Purcellville, VA, she also catered a sumptuous assortment of pupusas for the Board luncheon at INMED’s Opportunity Center. Nery’s moving story of struggle and triumph moved everyone to tears and is a poignant example of what INMED strives to achieve in the lives of those who just need an opportunity to succeed. Thankful Thursday

We are grateful to our friends at McGuireWoods—and especially Melissa Glassman, Deputy Managing Partner for Industry Teams and event organizer–for designating INMED’s Opportunity Center as the featured charity for its annual Executive Women’s Mixer last night at the Ritz Carlton in Tyson’s Corner, VA. Dynamic women from all over the region opened their hearts and their wallets to support and encourage our work with at-risk children and families in Loudoun County. Thank you for your generosity!

Learning by Doing

INMED is pleased to host a group of young executives from Mondelēz, a long-time partner in Brazil and South Africa, as part of the Leadership for Performance program. During this week, the leadership group will contribute new perspectives to help INMED tackle its greatest strategic challenges. This week, the LFP participants spent time at INMED’s Opportunity Center, helping children in our After-School program with homework, listening to the concerns of families in our Homelessness Prevention program and taking part in our Family Education workshop on saving money.

A Story of Wheels and Wings

Cecilia and her two-year-old son are enrolled in INMED’s Healthy Families program at the Opportunity Center in Sterling. When she entered the program, Cecilia was unemployed, didn’t have a driver’s license and had no means to pay for child care to work outside the home. She faced a downward spiral of obstacles.

An INMED Family Support Worker (FSW) helped Cecilia create an action plan to get a license, find affordable child care and obtain a stable job. Cecilia diligently followed the steps of her plan. Night after night, after putting her son to bed, she studied the DMV driver’s manual and eventually passed the driving test with flying colors. INMED’s FSW also worked with Cecilia to find child care subsidies she could apply for, as well as a full-time job.

Today, Cecilia drives her son to daycare before going to work at her new job. Her life is stable, and the future for her son is bright. Cecilia told her INMED FSW that it feels like having wings!

All INMED Children are Super

According to studies by the National Research Council and Institute of Medicine of the National Academy of Sciences, young children who lack at least one loving and consistent caregiver in the earliest years may suffer severe and long-lasting development problems. Studies of scientific brain research show environmental stress, even among infants and toddlers, can interfere with the proper development of neural connections inside the brain essential to a child’s proper social and emotional development.

INMED’s Moms & Babies class, as well as our Healthy Families program, promote and support early childhood development with a focus on parental bonding, the joy of play, nutrition, literacy and emotional and social growth. At INMED, we see all our children as super heroes! For more information on INMED’s parenting and family education classes at the Opportunity Center, visit
